I recently was looking at fish finders and noted that I lived near the Great Lakes. With all the large bodies of water in my area I need to find a good reel that covers medium to deep waters. The closest lake to me is Lake Erie and that is populated with Perch and Walleye. Can you give me the best reel and tackle line up for that kind of fishing?
Hey Ernest, when trying to cover deep water its not the fly reel you need to get right but the fly line. Fly fishing is mainly a top water sport anywhere in the top 30 ft of the water column and its pushing it at 30 ft.
To get down you need to decide which depth you need to get to and how fast as fly lines come in different densities, intermediate will go down slowly an inch to 2 inches per second where as sinkers will go from 2 to 10 in per second. You can also add weighted flies and a sinking poly leader to get quick depths.
The Piscifun Sword reel will hold any of these fly lines so is perfect for the job.

I will have to try the Piscifun Sword Fly Fishing Reel sometime. Nothing worse than having a trout or bass bite just to not be able to get it in due to a faulty reel, ugh, memories… But here is a question: if I know the size fly I plan to fish then how do I determine the size leader tippet I should use?
Tippet size is a good question, here is a link to the Orvis website that covers the range of sizes each tippet diameter covers. As you will see tippet will generally cover a few sizes so for me fishing for trout on size 10-14 hooks I will go for 3x or 4x tippet.
I’ve been interested in getting into Fly Fishing for a long time. I have a couple of friends who make their own flies and its like art work. I notice you mentioned it comes set up left handed right out of the box. I’m a right handed newbie. Do you think this reel would fit me well or should I look elsewhere? Hey Dev it’s really easy to switch the reel from left to right. All you need to do is remove the clip with a pair of long nose pliers take the roller off flip it over put it back on and replace the clip.
The only difficult thing about it is to make sure the clip doesn’t spring off or will you lose it. I do believe this reel would be a good fit for you. Its well priced but has loads of great features that you would find on a higher priced reel.

Hey Johnny you’re a lucky guy being in the district of California, there are loads of trout fisheries and rivers there. This website seems to name some of the best rivers to try, the Sacramento River is well know and full of trout. It also has a seasonal run or salmon and steelhead. The upper river is very accessible having Interstate 5 running along it with convenient off ramps directly taking you to the action. I might just put it on my bucket list. 🙂
As a newbie to fly fishing the Piscifun Sword is ideal its not too expensive so you can try it out and it has a load of good features. Its light, made from Aluminium and anodized to protect it and also comes in three nice colors.
The only downside is the drag is not sealed but for this price you wouldn’t expect it. Give it a good clean every now and again and rinse off after every use and it will last years.

Yes Logan it is set up for a lefty right out of the box so no issue having to change it over. It is rather easy though with only a set of long nose pliers required to remove the clip, flip and insert back again. There are so many reels on the market it can be a nightmare for newbies to choose the right fly reel for them. This one ticks a lot of the boxes for a fly fishing reel and should give you plenty of fun.
There are so many saltwater species here in our area maybe you can write some tips on how to catch sea fish like grouper or red snapper. I usually go after them with a lure rod but am wondering about the merits of fly fishing for them.

Saltwater fly fishing can be a bit tricky if your not used to casting not that I’m trying to put you off. I just mean there is usually a wind of some description and if you haven’t fly cast before you will most likely get into all sorts of tangles and frustrations.
I would first ask someone for a loan of a rod or go for a lesson with a sport fly angler to see if you can master it before buying any gear. With enough practice you will become proficient enough to cast in the sea and it will be a great activity to add to your sea life.
Grouper and Snapper usually like structure and if you have been fishing for them with lures you will probably know where they are at anyway. I would get a few large flies that will sink fast and strip them past the shoal of fish that should entice a take.
You will most likely need an 10ft 8-10 weight rod something with a bit of punch for the wind and strong enough to fight Grouper. On the saltwater resistant note the CDC Machined 6061 T6 aluminium alloy allows the Piscifun Sword reel to handle most conditions. As a precaution I would make sure to rinse off with freshwater as soon as you get ashore though.
I love fly fishing – having learned it as a child fishing with my grandfather. He was an expert at it!
My problem was learning the knack of placing the lure exactly where I wanted it. I never could get the hang of the overhead cast so, I became a sidearm caster in the face of much criticism from my overhead casting grandfather.
Of course, when I started to catch more fish than he did, he not only stopped deriding me, he actually started perfecting his own sidearm casting technique!
I’m always looking for the next best fly casting reel to put on my 10’ Fenwick AETOS fly rod.

The one thing I am anxious about is being left handed. So, I would have to convert the Piscifun reel. Are needle nose pliers all you need to make this conversion?

Hey Jim your in luck the Piscifun fly reel is already set up for the left handed angler so no need to change it and you are correct a set of long nose pliers are all that is required.
NIce appearance, and very informative. Brought back a lot of old memories. I use to fly fish back in my younger days with most everything else would get a bit. I would take out the fly rod and catch some really nice bluegill. These are really fun to catch on a fly rod as they go nuts when you set the hook.
