Hi mark. Would this rod combo be good for fishing on the Delaware on the West and East branches. We do drifts and I want to make sure it would be worth buying. We do fish a lot more smaller places in Northeast PA…Little Lehigh, Jordan, etc. Hope to see your reply soon.
James the NXT is a great rod for small waterways and small species. The 8ft 6in 4/5 weight would be ideal for such a place as the Delaware edges. If fishing the main river then the 9ft 5/6 might be a better fit. It depends on how far you want to be able to cast. Lefty Kreh was adept with small rods and his input into these means you know it’s going to work well. Tight Lines
I just bought the 5/6 9′ rod, I am a beginner so it sounds like a rod for me to start on,
the review says it not good for big fish, So what would be the lightest weight of big fish we could say it would be starting out of its limit? so 0lb to ?lb
Thank You
Ross Anderson
Hi Ross it is really down to how you play the fish. I have seen guys land large fish up to 20lb on a rod like this however you need to play it for a long time and if trying to do catch and release its not viable as the fish will probably die after the long fight.
If targetting fish of this size you would be better going for an 8 weight outfit. However, this rod can land fish of anything up to 7-8 lb reasonably well for catch and release.
It seems like a good deal for fly fishing. I think when it comes to fishing gear, lightweight and durability should be a standard specs which is present in this product. I am not sure if the price is reasonable since I am not that inclined to fishing. I want to start this recreation in the future, can you recommend this fishing gear for beginner like me?
Dan it most definitely is a beginner fly fishing setup. I would recommend it. All your gear is setup and balanced ready to fish. The NXT fly combo is very lightweight and durable designed to last on the river or stream.
Thanks for your review post. I love fishing, I usually go fishing with my friends one or two times a month. To me, fishing with friends is quite a relaxing yet enjoyable time. However, I have not paid too much attention to my fishing equipment and how to fish properly. I saw the price of this combo is a bit steep, do you have any other recommendations for such a beginner like me?
There are more fly fishing combos in our main list. They are in 3 price categories so there is something to suit everyone however for that small extra price the NXT is an exceptional rod and well worth a second look.
Temple Fork NXT fly fishing combo…… I have not handled anything like this before, I have only seen it on TV or magazines. Well, I’m a fan of fishing, maybe it’s time to get further in the mood and have the experience of using this fly fishing rod.
The make I hear is quite good, with its combination of materials in its different parts. I hope I get a user manual along with it. I’ll give it a trial anyway.
The Temple Fork NXT was designed by Lefty Kreh and his team at the outfitters. The rod is perfect for delicate presentation and distance casting with its medium fast action.
Hey Mark, excellent post. I’ve never gone Fly Fishing before but your article got me curious about the sport and even more about trying it. Is it one of those sports you can try within every season or is it strictly for one type of season? Your article was excellent, I love the passion you showed in the article; it shows people that you care about you’re sharing with them and that’s going to take you far my friend. Good job!
Fly fishing can be done in any season RJ. It depends in which part of the world you are in and as long as the water hasn’t frozen over. However if the water is still fluid then fly fishing can be done. Here is a post I did on Winter stillwater fly fishing.
I’ve always wanted to try Fly fishing as I believe it can be quite tactical.
The technique I find most interesting in learning drag system technique.
Would this be a good rod to use for a novice fly fisher? I believe it is as you said it makes the process easier or less complicated?
This would be a great fly fishing combo setup for the beginner. Its light and already setup and balanced so you don’t have to struggle to get the basic casts to work. If not sure here is our full list of combos reviewed here on the website.
