Considerations when buying a new fly line
Before we consider the best fly line for trout let’s look first at what we should do to make sure we have the correct fly line for the task.
There are so many ways to fly fish for trout that we need to look at these permutations before purchasing a trout fly line.
For example,
- we can fish in rivers,
- still waters
- or the sea.
The target species can be very different too as small lough trout on an Irish moorland would be slightly different to fly fishing for steelhead in a river or river returning sea trout on the Rio Grande.
However, for the purpose of this article let’s consider fishing for brown trout in a river or rainbow trout in a Stillwater lake.
One of the first things we need to get correct is to match the fly line to the weight rating of the fly rod.
Most modern fly rods now have the rating stamped on the butt section and this makes it easy to match a fly line for our rod so we can load and flex it correctly for casting.
So if your rod says 6-7 on the butt section then we can use a 6 or 7 weight line to match up to it.
Fly lines are also rated with a weight on them so you can match this up. The 6 signifies using a double taper line where the 7 would be for a weight forward of shooting line.
This is only a guide and a proficient caster would be able to use either line on the same rod.
OK we now have the line rating sorted let’s look at the differences as mentioned above.
For the river brown trout fishing, we would most likely need to present the fly with precision and delicately with a dry fly so a need for a weight forward with a fine front end taper would be the best option.
This gives us the ability to mend the line also in the river to control the drift speed. This cannot be done well with a shooting head line.
If fly fishing for rainbow trout in a lake the need for casting large lures out far into stillwater would need the shooting head fly line.
This gives us the ability to cast flies to a good distance with long retrieves to hopefully induce a take.
As there are not usually a lot of features in a lake the need to mend line is not required so straight casts and retrieves are all that is usually needed.
To sum up, brown trout river dry fly fishing would require a weight forward long tapered line.
The rainbows in the lake would require a shooting head or a good weight forward short head fly line.

Other things to consider are the fly line density, color and profile. I’ll give you a short recap but to find out the in-depth differences then check out our post here on how to choose a fly line.
Density – The depth a fly line is fished at from full floating to fast sinking. There are some manufacturers out there now that have produced lines with double and triple densities.
These are specialist lines and ones to consider when you are competent as fly fishing. We have one in our list the 15ft ghost tip by Cortland as it’s such a great line for easily spooked fish where the tip is a slow sinking transparent section.
Color – Comes in many types, I would suggest a neutral color for easily spooked fish with a change of color at the running line to help with loading the rod.
Some like the bright colors for full floating to use as easy indicators for takes as the line twitches when a trout takes the fly.
I wouldn’t think too hard on the color though as manufacturers are well informed and know what works for fly fishing.
Profile – How the fly line is tapered – Is it mostly at the head for fast far casting or gentler for delicate presentation. The weight of a fly line is designated by the weight of the first 30ft.
The profile is how this 30ft is tapered. A line that starts with a small diameter at the tip and tapers thicker to the middle would be for delicate presentation whereas a line that is thickest at the tip is for forward distance casting like shooting head lines.
Loops – Does the line have a loop at one end two or none. Ready made loops are great for the beginner as they make it really easy to add leaders and the backing line.
Don’t worry though it’s really easy to make these connection and setup your fly line if they don’t have them but for convenience, it’s nice to have them ready made.
These are just guides but you can use these to fish for other species in different locations and a good fly angler always carries extra lines to help cover the possibilities that come up.

Airflo fly lines are the most amazing line I have ever had the pleasure of casting. To be able to make a 100 foot skagit style cast with no room behind you, and do it with a 5wt rod is absolutely FUN.
Excellent glide through the ferrules…easy casting, limited coiling memory. This is really great for beginner or intermediate fly fisherperson.
Airflo do produce great fly lines, I have had fun with the Forge and River and Stream lines. I can’t believe the price of the Forge fly line, its priced as a budget line but gives the performance of one at twice the price. Great for beginners looking to get into the sport.

Hey, great that your dad is an avid angler. On fishing in mountain streams thoughts to consider for me would be;
1) Make sure to let people know where you are going and when you will be back.
2) Always go with a pal, if alone don’t go too far off the beaten track and follow rule 1)
3) Mountain streams can be hazardous to wade so a wading staff can be useful.
4) If going far traveling lite is best so decide on the best tactics and only carry those items before setting off.
5) Get advice from other anglers or forums before setting off.
That’s a few things off the top of my head. I’m sure there is a post of content worth on this subject so thanks for the suggestion.
On the question of gear, it really depends on where he’s going and what is the target species, if we say trout then a 9ft 5 weight fully matched with a fly reel and fly line. A selection of small dry flies and streamers (check with other anglers before (5). A small scoop net, a pair of breathable waders with good grip boots, all that moving about will create moisture so breathability is a must. A decent wading jacket in case it decides to rain.

Hey Carmen, a professional fisherman eh! Fishing in the salt requires gear that will hold up to the corrosive properties of the sea as your husband will surely know. Make sure to get a reel with a sealed drag system, costs a bit more but well worth the effort as it makes for less problems further along.
When my brother returned to the Philippines last year from working in New Zealand, he brought with him some equipment for fly fishing. While I do not know how to figure out if the equipment is brand new or a second-hand especially the fly lines, I think he’ll do better with the ones listed here. I will definitely recommend this site to him so he can have better options the next time he buys fly lines online. He just returned to New Zealand to continue working as an OFW.
Second hand gear can be difficult to work out especially old fly lines as you don’t have the weight on them. Its down to trial and error testing on rods to see if they load correctly.

As the post talks about, you need to decide first which type of trout fishing you intend to do. If its in a river, a lake or stream. Do you intend to dry fly fish or stream lures in deep pools. Once you have decided which is best for you then hone down on which line will suit.
If however you are thinking of trying a bit of everything then the best all rounder fly line for beginners is the Forge line from Airflo its cheaper than the rest and does a good job. You can then purchase more lines to suit different parts of the sport once you get a taste for it.
Well I’m up for only my third outing at fly fishing for trout at the end of June in South Wales, and I have to admit I’m still near enough a complete newbie at this form of fishing.

Hey Chris, the Airflo Forge is a great line for the beginner. It has all the bells and whistles of the more advanced lines but comes at half the price. Airflo has done this deliberately to get beginners into the sport. Why give them a substandard line that will make learning so much harder.
These Forge lines are really great and will have you casting like a pro in no time. With the ability to get distance and presentation its a beautiful line for beginners or intermediate alike. I have a 5 weight in it and it flows well out of the guides.

I have a lake on the backside of my house, is there any difference when fishing in a pond as opposed to a lake? And I mean a big difference.

Isaac large trout would require a larger line rating, especially on the rod to be able to land them safely, very important when fishing catch and release.
The small line rating 3-4 is good for fishing light on small streams for grayling or brook trout up to 1.5lb. The larger line rating 7-8 would be good for trout on a lake of specimens around 7-10lb. You can of course still land trout on either line rating it just makes it more efficient when catching larger trout.
On the other question of pond versus lake. The size of the rod setup shouldn’t matter that much I would suggest a 6-7 weight if the trout in the water are bigger than 3lb. If smaller then a 5 weight would be fine. You still will be able to get the same distances with these two setups.
If fishing from a boat distance may not be that important whereas fishing from the shore then a distance line would be a better option.

If you are on a moderate budget I would suggest the Forge Fly Line from Airflo. Its a great line at a fraction of the cost from the main fly lines, designed as a beginner line to entice folks into the sport.
It works well for distance and presentation making it an ideal all-rounder fly fishing line for trout. In fact, Airflo has outdone themselves producing a line of great quality at a low cost. They could charge a lot more for this line and still get it.
Fly fishing has really evolved from years past to make it much more productive in landing a big catch. I didn’t know that there was so much involved in matching the different weights of line to the right rod and how this affects your casting ability.
My experiences in fly fishing weren’t that good. I thought it was all in my casting abilities. From your review, I have learned it was more in the type of line and the type of rod that I was using.

Kenneth matching is so important when fly fishing get the fly line too heavy or too light for the rod and you are into trouble with your casting. As a beginner the simpler you can make it for yourself the better. In my opinion, as a newbie, a fly fishing combo is a better choice.

I agree the fly line is the most important aspect. Get a good fly line to match your rod and you will be better set up to cast easier and catch fish. Put on a badly matched fly line and you will struggle to cast making loads of mistakes that will care any chance of a fish off into the sunset.
Those two lines you have picked out are very decent. Both cast very well and are perfect for the beginner. I would opt for the River and Stream as it has a higher score for the two of them. It really depends on are you after distance or presentation.

Having the correct fly line will help get you trout quickier thats for certain.
There are so many things to consider when obtaining the correct fly line like where you are fishing, how deep is the pool how fast is the water. This will mean getting the correct density to allow the line to sit at the correct depth where the trout are lying.
For example; a fast, deep, river pool will need a heavy short head line to take the flies down quickly wereas a slow, shallow, meandering pool will need a full floating long tapered line to allow delicate casts and line mending when on the water.
These two lines will not work well in the other situation, although you could in theory still catch trout your chances will be limited.
So my advice decide on which type of fly fishing you intend to do first and go for a line to suit that. You can always add new lines to your arsenal once established. A good idea is a multi-tip fly line if you are going to cover loads of different situations. So you can swap out the tips for different densities to take you up or down the water level.
On the topic of beginner fly combos. A great way to get into fly fishing as you get a full setup with a rod, reel, fly line, tippet and accessories also usually a tube to carry everything in and to keep it safe.
As the gear is already matched and balanced to work together it takes all the guesswork out of trying to set it up yourself. A very fast and convenient way to get into the sport of fly fishing quickly. An added bonus is the kits usually come a good bit cheaper than buying the items individually somewhere about 15-20% which is also good for the beginner.

Hey Sam the article was directed at trout which mostly swim in freshwater unless you are going after Sea Trout. Most salt water fly lines are built differently usually to allow for shooting line out to fish that are swimming at a distance from you. A bit of casting practice will be required so you can cast well at distance beforehand if a beginner. I would need a bit more info as to how you plan to fish and for what species to get you sorted with a setup to help.

Jacob the Airflo fly lines are really good, the River and Stream would be a good starting point for you. As for the rod to use may I suggest that as a beginner you go for a combo. That means you get a rod, reel, fly line and some accessories. It would already be setup and balanced ready to be used. It takes all the guess work out of getting it ready so you can go fishing quicker. As you get into the sport you can learn all the techniques used to get your rod setup properly but you can still be fishing in the meantime. Its a no brainer for me.

This is a new topic for me. I know a few people who do fly fishing I am going to send them this article . I found it interesting that you would need different types of rods and weights etc… for different species of trout and for fishing in different regions for example lake and river overall I found the post very informative good job
Yes Joseph, having several rods that work in different situations is better than having one and trying to make it work everywhere. Don’t get me wrong you can make do with a decent all round rod but it will not be great in every situation. There are times when you need a soft rod and times when you need a fast rod both you cannot get in one rod.
We have lived at the coast for a while now, and that is why I haven’t seen fresh water trout or gone trout fishing for a while. I remember it being the most delicious fish to eat.
This is a most informative article about what fly lines to use for catching trout, and I have made some notes for when I go fishing with my brothers again upland in July. I have never tried lines that float on top of the water, and I am going to ask my Brother to order some of these from Los Angeles before he comes here, as the postage and shipping ends up costing more than the fly line for me down here in South Africa.

Michel, I understand the problem exporting fly lines to countries that don’t make the main brands can be costly but I do know there are some good outfitters in South Africa. I’m sure if you reached out to those you may find the products cheap enough. Although having your brother bring some with him would be a good choice also. As for the best fly for trout I have written another article on the subject.
We fish on rivers and ponds but never on the sea. However, I saw some fishing on the sea with special fishing gadgets with long fly lines reaching to a distance.
I wonder so much on the terms of each part of the fishing tool and don’t know what do I call them but I would like to mention one which the author has touched, the density. I think this part is important to consider when in terms of distance and right sinking depth. The heavier the density the more distance it can reach and deeper it can sink.
Exactly right, the denser the fly line they easier it is to cast and the faster it will sink. Most of these fly lines reviewed are full floating but many come with sinking variants. If you want to get out far and sink fast a shooting fly line may be the answer. I love these when salmon fishing but they have great use in the salt water when after Tarpon. Permits or GT’s.
Initially I planned getting Rio fly lines as a newbie but with all the information have gathered from your blog, I think Forge Fly Line should be preferable now. I am a novice in this but from your educative post ,have gained so much that I had to bookmark your page to get more important tips from you. As a beginner the Airlfo Forge is a decent fly line. It is priced low to help beginners getting into the sport who have to fork out cash for all the gear. That being said it is not a cheap fly line in quality in fact Airflo in my opinion could ask for more money to buy this line its that good.

I have been trying the RIO range out and find that it has some great performance but its best to buy a product that suits the environment where you are fishing. Personally I love the RIO Grand as I do a lot of fresh water fishing and find the performance superb.

Hey Rich, thanks for stopping by. The Rio Grand is a top-notch freshwater fly line as you say and one I keep in my arsenal.
I know now that pressure from the public and new government legislation many manufacturers are doing their best to reduce their carbon and plastic footprints on our oceans and waterways.
Many have signed up with new cardboard spools instead of the old plastic ones and outer boxes being made now with renewable cardboard. I am not so sure on the plastic coating on the fly line itself though as each manufacturer has a different mix of chemicals to make their fly lines and how these are made up is mostly top secret.
I do presume though as many fly fishing manufacturers are conservational and they will do their best to help clean up the plastic situation so well highlighted in the media lately.
I know from personal experience that many anglers are doing their bit to help clean up their local waterways and rivers and take all their garbage home afterward. It’s a new trend I welcome and is long overdue. I for one will work to help keep the water cleaner for the generations coming behind.

As mentioned there are no fly lines that will do everything perfectly so its really down to deciding which types of fishing you will be doing and looking at the lines most suited for it. Ideally a fly angler will have many fly lines so they can cover all the options with a quick change of the line.

I love Rio lines too Aweda but Airflo produce some cracking fly lines also. The Forge Fly Line is a great line for beginners or a second line for anyone looking to build up a collection. I was impressed with its handling especially throwing large flies.
