Before we consider the best fly line for trout let’s look first at what we should do to make sure we have the correct fly line for the task.
There are so many ways to fly fish for trout that we need to look at these permutations before purchasing a trout fly line.
we can fish in rivers,
or the sea.
The target species can be very different too as small lough trout on an Irish moorland would be slightly different to fly fishing for steelhead in a river or river returning sea trout on the Rio Grande.
However, for the purpose of this article let’s consider fishing for brown trout in a river or rainbow trout in a Stillwater lake.
One of the first things we need to get correct is to match the fly line to the weight rating of the fly rod.
Most modern fly rods now have the rating stamped on the butt section and this makes it easy to match a fly line for our rod so we can load and flex it correctly for casting.
So if your rod says 6-7 on the butt section then we can use a 6 or 7 weight line to match up to it.
Fly lines are also rated with a weight on them so you can match this up. The 6 signifies using a double taper line where the 7 would be for a weight forward of shooting line.
This is only a guide and a proficient caster would be able to use either line on the same rod.
OK we now have the line rating sorted let’s look at the differences as mentioned above.
For the river brown trout fishing, we would most likely need to present the fly with precision and delicately with a dry fly so a need for a weight forward with a fine front end taper would be the best option.
This gives us the ability to mend the line also in the river to control the drift speed. This cannot be done well with a shooting head line.
If fly fishing for rainbow trout in a lake the need for casting large lures out far into stillwater would need the shooting head fly line.
This gives us the ability to cast flies to a good distance with long retrieves to hopefully induce a take.
As there are not usually a lot of features in a lake the need to mend line is not required so straight casts and retrieves are all that is usually needed.
To sum up, brown trout river dry fly fishing would require a weight forward long tapered line.
The rainbows in the lake would require a shooting head or a good weight forward short head fly line.

Other things to consider are the fly line density, color and profile. I’ll give you a short recap but to find out the in-depth differences then check out our post here on how to choose a fly line.
Density – The depth a fly line is fished at from full floating to fast sinking. There are some manufacturers out there now that have produced lines with double and triple densities.
These are specialist lines and ones to consider when you are competent as fly fishing. We have one in our list the 15ft ghost tip by Cortland as it’s such a great line for easily spooked fish where the tip is a slow sinking transparent section.
Color – Comes in many types, I would suggest a neutral color for easily spooked fish with a change of color at the running line to help with loading the rod.
Some like the bright colors for full floating to use as easy indicators for takes as the line twitches when a trout takes the fly.
I wouldn’t think too hard on the color though as manufacturers are well informed and know what works for fly fishing.
Profile – How the fly line is tapered – Is it mostly at the head for fast far casting or gentler for delicate presentation. The weight of a fly line is designated by the weight of the first 30ft.
The profile is how this 30ft is tapered. A line that starts with a small diameter at the tip and tapers thicker to the middle would be for delicate presentation whereas a line that is thickest at the tip is for forward distance casting like shooting head lines.
Loops – Does the line have a loop at one end two or none. Ready made loops are great for the beginner as they make it really easy to add leaders and the backing line.
Don’t worry though it’s really easy to make these connection and setup your fly line if they don’t have them but for convenience, it’s nice to have them ready made.
These are just guides but you can use these to fish for other species in different locations and a good fly angler always carries extra lines to help cover the possibilities that come up.
Airflo has been producing fly lines since the late 1980s when Paul Burgess decided to take it into his own hands to develop fly lines not made from PVC at that time.
Now world leaders in fly line development and responsible for the addition of the welded loop and ridged line technology.
Airflo remains at the top of fly line manufacturing and has a large following of happy fly anglers the world over. Buy with confidence an Airflo fly line.
Airflo Super-Dri River Fly Line & Stream
Airflo Fly Line Super-Dri River & Stream uses the Super-DRI technology that ensures the fly line’s performance is upbeat.
The technology is depicted from the high-grade material that effectively repels scum, water, dirt and other materials that can cause a hindrance while using the fly line interfering with its performance.
The Nano Material Technology employed by this fly line ensures the line is always afloat and shoots a far distance compared to any other fly line. The Zone Technology reduces line sticking and compression during fly fishing.
On both ends of the fly line is micro loops-one on each side. The welded loops give your fly line an excellent transition without any hindrances to your leader.
Generally, it offers maximum protection to your fly line from what capillary action can lead to. Added loops give the fly line the ability to whizz out through the guides a lot faster than an ugly knot hand-tied.

Rear Loaded Taper
This fly line is of the floating type because it is engineered with a powerful Nanotechnology that ensures it remains floating and stays afloat for the lifetime of the line, unlike other fly lines.
The Airflo Fly Line Super-Dri River & Stream uses the Delta taper profile that allows for a longer front taper of 19 and later ends in a thin sized tip diameter.
The Delta taper lays down the fly in a gentle manner and makes the casting line have a great roll. You do not have to be forceful when casting multiple flies because the Delta taper profile takes care of the distance.
The type of fly fishing recommended for this Airflo Fly Line Super-Dri River & Stream is Streaming and Dry Fly to ensure you properly catch trout in the rivers.
The floating line is well designed for a tandem fly structure and is a feature that you will love because it becomes less hectic to cast, quick and easy to make big catches and make your session entirely fun.
The Airflo Forge Fly Line is engineered with the super DRI technology that makes its performance top-notch. This technology is responsible for the dirt, water, and scum and material repulsion during fly fishing. Further advancements by Airflo have seen this fly line use the Nano Material Technology that enhances the floating, mechanism of the fly line and the distance it shoots is far and incomparable to any other fly line.
While other fly lines have neatly folded welded loops on both sides-the front and the back, this Forge type has only one welded loop at the front of the fly line. To increase its functionality, add to it a poly leader via a loop to loop connection that greatly improves its presentation while fly fishing. You will love this feature because the welded loop is made to be removable and if once in a while you feel you don’t want to use it, chuck it.
The Airflo Forge Fly Line takes the floating-style because of the powerful Super DRI technology by Airflo that it is engineered with to maintain high buoyancy rates. The tapered design is weight forward- the taper allows it to work at all levels when casting because it is relatively long for a smooth turnover and accurate deliveries.
The total length dimension is 90 feet. The Head length is 40 feet, the belly length is 25 feet and the running line length is 50 feet.
Its ability to use color to increase performance sets it apart from other fly lines. The olive color at the head helps in reducing line flash in the air. The running line is colored yellow to allow you to easily see the transition process at the back taper and you can estimate the amount of line at an optimum level to aerialize.
Airflo Forge Fly Line is an all-around fly line and can be used for nymphing, dry fishing and streaming because it takes the floating-style that is applicable in shallow waters and the weight forward taper makes it also ideal for use in deeper flows.
Designed by Airflo to be affordable to beginners starting out this line with its condensed tapered head will throw big bugs in salt was as well as dries on the river. Looking to get started in fly fishing then the Forge is for you.
Airflo has maintained its Super DRI technology in most if not all of its fly lines.
The technology is employed to create a material that has very strong adhesive power to repel scum, water, dirt and other material that can cause hindrance to the rod rings while fly fishing.
If you are an angler, you will certainly love this special technology feature. Its ability to add yards to your cast is superb. Maintaining its floating ability while repelling substances at the same time makes its performance high.
The Zone Technology reduces friction while casting and adds to the casting distance making your floating line durable. The technology works by using low compression compounds in parts of the line that experience more working and the line will never stick on the rod guides during shooting or hauling.
There are welded loops on both sides of the fly line-the front and the backside that are neatly folded and this makes the connections to the leaders and backing very easy.
This feature is one that will excite you and exceed your expectations in case you haven’t tried using this XCEED fly line.
The Airflo Super-Dri Xceed Trout Fly Line is a floating type and is meant for use by anglers who love to present their flies on the top of the water. A polyleader can be added to sink the tip if required.
The total length dimension of this fly line is 90 feet. The head measures 36 feet, the belly is 26 feet and the running line has a length of 54 feet.
Professionally designed with the XCEED profile, the head is compact and short. Considering the standard weight of fly lines at the head, this one is overweight and this makes it well optimized for casting during the wind and generates very high line speeds.
Although designed for distance casting we struggled to get it to the maximum you would expect. A lot better at medium distances and turning over larger flies so great for nymphing and streamers.

The coating makes floating easier.
The Zone Technology from Airflo greatly reduces friction while casting and prolongs the lifespan of the fly line in addition to adding distance while fly fishing.
During shooting and hauling, this Zone Technology prevents the line from sticking on the rod guides in areas that experience more stress.
The Airflo Super-Dri Elite Trout Fly Line is made with micro-loops that are totally smooth and durable.
The loops are neatly folded and are positioned on the two sides of the fly line-the front and the backside to allow for an easy loop-to-loop connection to the leader, backing and the shooting line.
The line type in this Elite fly line is floating and is made possible by the Super DRI technology that works to maintain buoyancy while creating a very strong cohesive effect to water, dirt and scum that may cause hindrance while casting.
The Airflo Super-Dri Elite Trout Fly Line has a total dimension length of 90ft. Its head length is 36 feet, the belly measures 23 feet while the running line has a dimension length of 54 feet.
